I Hate Rain... But Thank God For Insurance
So far, everything's been going swell at work. It's not really hard work at all; it's not busywork like I sometimes got at school. I always hated busywork. At least right now, it seems there's a good bit of downtime; out of the 8-hour day, I work less than 3, and surf the web the rest of the time. And I get paid for it.
Last Friday, the VP of our department took my supervisor and I to lunch. We did go to a chain (Macaroni Grill), but the food was great. I had a "create your own" pasta deal. I had penne, onions, and garlic cloves smothered in Bolognese (meat) sauce and topped with meatballs. They also have a great garlic bread with olive oil dip. Needless to say, I needed a mint afterwards.
They also have this deal where they put up profiles of the new employees on the company intranet. Right now, it's me who is up there. Now everybody knows who I be.
Of course, there is some bad news. The Saturn is kaput. No, I didn't wreck it. But it's dead, nonetheless.
Last Friday, I was coming home from work. There were some nasty storms out, and I got caught in a flash flood a couple of streets from home. The water was 7-8" deep, and it stalled out the car. The mechanic diagnosed hydrolock, i.e. the watery kiss of death. It would cost about $7,000 to replace the engine, and we paid around $11,000 for the car. Needless to say, the insurance people will probably total it. That means I have to put the insurance money, as well as some more money, on another car. I'm thinking a Ford this time.
It's a good thing I get paid on Thursday. And it'll be a full paycheck this time! Also, I can't wait for Labor Day. Finally, I have an excuse to celebrate it.

Just Got Paid!
I've only been on the job for a week, but I already got my first paycheck. It's not a bad amount, especially when you consider I've only been there a week. We get paid twice a month, so I got lucky there. Of course, Social Security took out a huge chunk, and I'll probably never see that when I'm old.
Anyway, it's not hard work. My job basically involves analyzing data, which the salespeople can use to sell more pharmaceuticals. It's a lot of querying the ol' SQL Server. Speaking of which: new poll. How long will I last?
So far, it's not too bad (yet), so I have a little bit of time to surf Fark or read on the history of Tandy TRS-80's and Apple II's (or should that be ]['s?) Oregon Trail and Lemonade Stand kicked ass back in middle school. My first desktop was an old Apple IIc, and that was back around '93. I thought it was kick-ass. Time definitely changes your thinking.
I also get an hour for lunch. I usually bring my lunch, but I go out for lunch on Fridays. Last week was Wendy's (not by choice). I'm thinking WOW Wingery this week. I can also run to the nearby Old Navy if I need new work clothes, which I did yesterday.
As I mentioned before, the only thing I don't like is that I have to get up at 5:30, eat breakfast, get ready and be there for 7:30. I'll deal... just means I get to watch old reruns of Saved by the Bell instead of staying up to watch [adult swim].
Anyway, I gotta go to bed soon. Gotta go to work tomorrow!

Hell Hath Froze Over... I Got A Job!!!!!!!!
That's right, folks. I got a job. Really.
Last week, I went to Atlanta for Georgia State grad school orientation. It was pretty boring, and we were there for 5 hours. Also, the free dinner wasn't that great, so I went and got a snack afterwards.
However, a couple of Fridays ago, I got a call from Pan-American Labs in Covington. They saw my resume and brought me in for an interview for a Sales Information Analyst position. Yes, it is an IT position. I get to work with databases and the like. The interview was last Thursday.
Last Friday, I was at the doctor. I had a crapload of wax clogging up both ears, so I was getting it cleaned out. While I was at the doctor, I got a call, and I was offered a job.
Today, I called PamLab up, and I accepted their offer. It's a pretty good offer. I start on Wednesday, so I need to buy some more office clothes.
That means I have some things to do. First thing is to adjust my sleep schedule. Work starts at 7:30 AM. It's like NHS all over again. Second, I need to cancel my enrollment at Georgia State. Thirdly, I need to call all the soft drink distributors in the area and pester one of them into carrying Cheerwine around here.
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go! Finally!
P.S. We had a thunderstorm here yesterday. Lightning struck somewhere nearby. Lucklily, none of our computers were affected. Unfortunately, our DSL modem was fried. We won't get a new one until tomorrow, so I'm posting via a neighbor's wireless connection.
